Perseid Meteors on August 11th and 12th August, 2017:

If you are a late night sleeper, sky watcher or nature enthusiast, you may be in for a treat of natural fireworks of Perseid Meteors.

What are Perseid  Meteors:

Perseid Meteors are produced by the debris of comet swift-tuttle left behind during its orbit around the sun, which takes about 130 years. When the earth comes close to the orbit of the comet, which happens once a year during July/August, the debris rams into the earth's atmosphere at a speed of 60km/sec to create bright steaks of light called Perseid Meteors.

When to watch:

In India one can watch the meteor on 11th and 12th August from the northern hemisphere from midnight to dawn though the moon's brightness cloudy sky can make it difficult.

Some facts about the Meteor:

Meteors do not reach the earth. They start burning at a distance of 120 kms above earth's surface before becoming ash at a distance of 60 kms above.
Normally there will be 90 to 100 meteors, but this year it could double that.
The meteors are named after that part of the constellation the meteors appear from.
The meteors travel at a speed of 1,35,000 miles per hr.

India worst place to live after retirement (2):

The Global Retirement Index (GRI) published yearly by Natixis Global attempts to provides a measure of supportive climate available to retirees in 43 countries including India. India is at the bottom of the Index.

The reasons contributing to this, affecting retirees and pensioners are,

Increase in in life expectancy; earlier people use to live for about 10 to 15 years after retirement which has now increased to 25 to 35 years.

Increase in wage differential between working and retired people.

Decreasing interest rates fetching less return on savings to retirees.

Expensive quality health care which and can wipe out a large portion of one's savings.

Health insurance provided free by the government has not reached all sections of the aged and is unrealistic so that one has to spend considerably from one's savings as well.

Health insurance premium has increased many folds and hospital expenses have outpaced the coverage provided by the insurance policy.

Poor environment like water and air pollution, poor infrastructure and poor transport facilities.

Population and low percapita income has, as always, been a factor.

Partial Eclipse of the moon:

A partial lunar eclipse will be visible in parts of Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia today. A lunar eclipse occurs when the earth travels between the moon and the sun, which happens on a full moon day when one of moon nodes comes closest to the sun, causing the shadow of the earth to fall on the moon. In India the partial eclipse will be visible between 10.55 PM today and 12.45 AM (about 2 hours) tomorrow.

In layman's language, during the eclipse today the full moon's brightness will slowly start reducing due to the earth's shadow falling on it (penumbral eclipse), and at a point in time a portion of the moon will become dark (partial eclipse),  on it coming directly behind the earth.

Source: Wikipedia                                     Then the reverse will happen. Slowly the moon       l                                                                   will move away from behind the earth, and then from its shadow to regain its full brightness. The total time of the eclipse, including the penumbral eclipse, is between 9.25 PM today and 2.20 AM (about 5 hours) tomorrow.

One can  watch the lunar eclipse live on Slooh.com

The next lunar eclipse will be on 31 January 2018 and will be visible from all parts of the sub-continent.
