According to the web site livescience.com,  a couple in South Carolina has filed a lawsuit against Amazon, alleging that the company sold faulty solar eclipse glasses that did not adequately protect their eyes during last week's eclipse.

The proposed class-action lawsuit was filed in a South Carolina federal court on Tuesday (Aug. 29), according to Reuters.

The lawsuit says that the couple purchased a three-pack of solar eclipse glasses on Amazon in early August. They used these glasses to view the solar eclipse on Monday, Aug. 21, which was visible across the United States.

They did not look at the sun without wearing the glasses, but soon after, they claim that they experienced a number of eye symptoms, including dark spots in their vision, blurriness and changes in perception of color, the lawsuit says. These are all symptoms of solar retinopathy, or damage to the eye's retina that happens from looking directly at the sun. Often, symptoms of solar retinopathy are temporary, but sometimes they are permanent.

Prior to the eclipse, Amazon did issue a recall of some of the solar eclipse glasses sold on its site. In these cases, customers received an email from Amazon saying that the company could not verify that the purchased glasses were made by a recommended manufacturer. But the couple say that they never received the recall email.

The lawsuit is seeking to represent people who, like this couple, claim they experienced injuries after using solar eclipse glasses bought on Amazon.

Nepal-China Joint Venture:

Himalaya Airlines, a Nepal-China joint venture airline, started its inaugural flight from Kathmandu to the city of Dammam in Saudi Arabia on Friday night.

The company said the airline will be operating a daily direct flight between the two cities to meet the strong demand from air travellers, especially Nepali migrant workers.

With this new route, Himalaya Airlines would be able to cater to over 500,000 Nepalis staying in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, enabling many of them to rejoice with their families during this festival season.

Air India and Jet Airways also operate in this sector.

Online Grocery business:

Online grocery business is more challenging than other online consumer goods, because of the very nature of it. Packaged branded items are more amenable for online marketing. Others like perishables, items with expiry date, items with particular shelf life, loose items etc. may be little difficult.

Consumers are habituated to shop at local retail shops and nearby supermarkets, and to change this will be difficult, unless the incentive in online shopping is large enough that one cannot ignore it.

There are a few businesses in this line in select cities who are barely existing. Some have cut down  and some have not expanded even after being in this line for a couple of years. Although the online grocery business is growing at a reasonable pace the profit is not enough given the high distribution cost.

Under this scenario Amazon is entering this online business in a big way, initially in Bangalore. Having obtained the approval to invest in this line of business, it is  also launching its own brand, see here.

Preparation for CAT Exam:

It is now time to start preparation for CAT. The common admission test (CAT) is normally conducted in November, every year for admission to all IIMs and other management institutes across the country. The test is computer based, conducted jointly by IIMs and TCS.

Get more details from here regarding eligibility, syllabus, date of application etc.

There are several tutorial classes and online mock tests. Tutorials are normally for a fee and mock tests are available, both, for a fee as well as free But choosing the right tutorial in your area of residence, or online is the biggest challenge. Some fleece gullible students a couple of thousand without proper coaching.

Books are another source of knowledge and training one self. Even if you have to spend a couple of hundred on books, you can always pass it on to your juniors so that they also benefit. Some books are available in Amazon.

The company, started in a garage for e-books, doesn't need any introduction. It  is the biggest in fashion apparels and accessories  seller in America. In India, though Amazon made its debut only in 2013, it has made a large impact in the electronics, mobiles and books segment. In others, including fashions, it is low, but the growth is encouraging.

Paytm is one of India's online mobile payment and commerce platforms. It started with online mobile recharge and payments, and today it has an online marketplace.

Not to be left behind the Tata group are also in to the online business. They offer all that others in this line are in. Their strength is their group companies who have the technology to back them. Of course, they will come up with some unique marketing strategies to make an impression.

News & Views:

Cricket:

BCCI has appointed Bharat Arun as bowling coach as recommended by the team coach Ravi Shastri.
Earlier, Ravi Shastri was appointed as the team coach after Anil Kumble resigned before completion of his contract period, reportedly due to tiff with the captain.

The CAC had minimal role to play in these appointments making it almost redundant.
BCCI will appear more forthright if, in future, it appoints the support staff directly in consultation with the captain. Only, BCCI must have more senior test players.

ITC:

ITC fell by about 13% in the stock market. The reason given was, high GST on tobacco.

ITC is a well diversified company. Already it has shifted its core business from tobacco based products. So, not withstanding the ratings/comments, the fall will be only temporary. It will only benefit due lower net taxes on food and confectioneries.
